Punakha Tshechu Zhabdrung Thongdrel Festival
About this experience
"Punakha Tshechu celebrates the deeds of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, over three days at the winter capital's fortress-monastery. The festival's most moving moment occurs at dawn when the Zhabdrung Thongdrel — a vast silk applique depicting Bhutan's founding monk-ruler — is displayed at the dzong's riverside facade before an ocean of kira-clad devotees. The Guru Tshengye Cham dance enacted by monks in elaborate eight-faced masks is among Bhutan's most spectacular ritual performances."
