"Punakha serves as a profound link to Bhutan’s past, having functioned as the nation's capital until 1955. Located at a relatively lower altitude of about 1,200 meters, the valley enjoys a temperate climate that makes it a lush, fertile haven for agriculture, particularly famous for its sprawling red and white rice paddies. The crown jewel of the district is the Punakha Dzong, an awe-inspiring fortress-monastery situated at the strategic junction of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. Recognized as one of the most majestic structures in the country, the dzong is renowned for its intricate woodwork and its role as the winter home for the Je Khenpo and the central monk body. It was here that the first King of Bhutan was crowned in 1907, and more recently, it hosted the royal wedding of the fifth King, underscoring its enduring importance to the monarchy. A short trek through nearby villages leads to the Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, known as the Divine Madman, whose unorthodox teachings left a lasting cultural mark on the region, most notably the phallus paintings on local homes intended to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. This temple remains a significant pilgrimage site for couples seeking fertility blessings. For those who appreciate spiritual art and architecture, the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten stands as a testament to modern Bhutanese craftsmanship, built by the Queen Mother for world peace and offering sweeping views of the valley from its heights. The district is also an emerging center for adventure tourism, with the gentle rapids of its rivers providing ideal conditions for white-water rafting and kayaking. Every year, the valley comes alive during the Punakha Tshechu and Dromche, where the local community gathers to witness sacred mask dances and a dramatic reenactment of a 17th-century battle. From the tranquil village of Nobgang to the dramatic iron suspension bridge—one of the longest in the country—Punakha offers a harmonious blend of historical significance, spiritual energy, and natural splendor that captivates every visitor."
